This year, on Sunday, August 5th, we will be hosting our first (and hopefully annual), 5K Run, Walk and Roll race to benefit the Freedom Service Dogs of America and Operation Freedom. Freedom Service Dogs of America (FSD) custom trains dogs rescued almost entirely from shelters across the Metro Denver area and the Front Range, to assist and provide companionship for people with permanent disabilities. Though Operation Freedom, these dogs are placed with veterans, of all ages, with a wide variety of needs. Any dog that does not fulfill all the comprehensive training requirements is found an adoptive home. Be sure to check them out at: www.freedomservicedogs.org
For our first year (partly due to the parking issues we all know so well), we are having to limit our participant numbers to around 200. We hope to find a way to increase this number for next year, perhaps with shuttles). I am reserving as many as 20 spaces for my friends from Flyball—I understand there are already 200 participants expected for the race, so let me know ASAP if you are interested (303-935-6105 or tarphardey@…). Entry into the race is $30 (proceeds to go to FSD), entry into Highland Games is a discounted $10 each, for yourself and up to 4 other people. (Regular price is $14 for Sunday.) The goal is to raise enough money to train two dogs, each costing around $20,000 to $25,000 to train. This means we need to really push the envelope for pledges, so need to get started soon. We are considering ways to drum up extra pledges for everyone.
The race will be on cement pathways, mostly down hill, and will start at a high school to the south of our park. The finish will be near where we had the Flyball the past two years. Runners, walkers and rollers (wheelchairs), will each be started separately, to be kept out of each other’s way. There will be a pipe band at the start and another at the finish. Shuttle buses are available for you to either get up to the start, or return to your car.
You are encouraged to run with your dog, and you will be provided a special ribbon pass for your dog. I believe there are plans for shirts, prizes etc., but the details are yet to be finalized. I will keep you posted via Region 19 Yahoo.
