As we’ve known for some time, Athens Derby sleeps this year because of a major expansion that’s underway at our host facility The Classic Center.
Still, there will be flyball in North Georgia this summer. I submitted a request for sanctioning of Flyin’ the Coop, one 2-day tournament, July 7 and 8 in the poultry capital of the world, Gainesville, Georgia. Georgia Mountains Center, while similar to The Classic Center on niceness, is smaller and can accommodate only one ring. Entries for Regular, Multi and Open are limited; Vets, unlimited. The facility has good air, plenty of dog walking space and quite a bit of dining within a few blocks. Parking will cost $2 per day. Crating will be in the arena where we are racing, although space should allow us to keep everyone well off the lanes.
We have negotiated rates with one area hotel and have blocked 40 rooms. We will post more on that after the weekend when they have had an opportunity to set up our group. This is our preferred facility, but we will provide an alternate should this fill or you prefer elsewhere. Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association has an event in town that Saturday, so you’ll want to book early. Our room block will be released June 6, but the results of the draw (flyball not shooting) should be determined before then. Entries close June 1.
